WHY DO YOU WANT A CAREER IN ADVERTISING?
The other day, I was filling out a form. I was trying to apply for an advertising trainee program and the last question was “why do you want a career in advertising (500 words)?”
And for the first time in a while, I had to search deeply within myself to find answers.
Well….I did.
I began writing……
I'd always say that advertising is like that romantic partner who pushes you to be a better person in various capacities.
When I learned about advertising, it felt like I had finally found a place I fit into. It was easy to adjust to that world.
Typically, people would say, "Oh, I have a passion for this career," but I often think that saying you have passion for something is such a vague statement that lacks depth.
So rather than just say that I have a passion for this career, I'd say something that shows just how much passion I have for it.
Beyond the passion and the opportunity to solve problems creatively, advertising helps me be a better person who is keen on excellence and value. I read a book titled "It’s Not How Good You Are, it’s How Good You Want to Be."
I think that was the book that made me realize just how badly I want to be an ad girl. Most times, it's a constant mental battle of doubting my creative abilities and wondering if I actually do fit into this world. But then, on the flip side, regardless of my doubts, every day I remind myself of how badly I want to excel at advertising.
Thanks to advertising, I'm learning about cars, planes, life, fashion, dogs, the human mind, etc. I even watch cartoons from time to time (for context, I hate cartoons).
I do all of these for myself and the people/clients I'll work for. But I also do these things because the industry requires excellence and creativity. And creativity is a lifestyle that requires you to be a sponge that can soak in anything.
In all of this, I'm learning to be a better thinker, a better listener, a better creative, a better writer, a better observer, etc.
And with these qualities, I know I'll always be able to put my best foot forward when briefs come.
So why do I want a career in advertising?
I want to truly help people solve problems, I want to create excellent creative work that yields results, I want to grow, and I want to see my work on a billboard and smile.
